God designed us to be conduits of His grace, not hoarders of His gifts. We are created for generous living. Giving is not always easy, but it’s an act of worship, faith, and obedience.
The Bible has a lot to say about our money and how the way we use it is an indicator of our relationship with God. The Old Testament shows a pattern of proportionate giving and voluntary giving as acts of worship to the Lord known as tithes and offerings. A tithe means a tenth of your income. An offering is anything you decide to give beyond the tithe. In the New Testament, Jesus affirmed the tithe (Matt. 23:23), and we see a continued pattern of generous giving in the early church. Christians lived sacrificial, generous lives toward one another to meet needs and advance the gospel.
So, we see in Scripture a good foundation for Christians to give tithes and offerings to the church. At the same time, we believe Christians have freedom to give with a joyful heart as the Lord leads them.
